COURSE REPORT
Apologies for the lack of notes last week. I was enjoying a few days away with the family during the school holidays.
Whilst I have been away the team have been busy keeping the course in great condition for the time of the year and whilst we have had an increase in rain the course is taking it very well at the moment. Last week we applied more nutrients onto the greens, tees and aprons to help keep the plant growing and harden up for the winter months. Mid- October is a transitional period for golf greens: cooler soils, slower growth, and high disease pressure means we have to get timings correct with our spraying programme. We continue to open up the surface using both the shallow slitter and pro core which has helped with the high disease pressure we have seen over the last couple of weeks. We seemed to have checked the disease for now and hopefully with temperatures dropping we can avoid any scarring. All other surfaces apart from rough continue to be cut weekly with the tees now recovering very well and benefiting from the rest and hand cutting. We will continue to rest these going forward with the exception of some competitions. Thank you for your support on this. The leaves are now starting to drop on the course and we have had the big blower out clearing areas as well as the smaller hand blowers out each day clearing greens and tees. The ditch in front of the ladies tee has been cleared along with other ditches strimmed. More tree bases have been bark chipped and the bunkers have all been edged and raked daily where possible. We will monitor the course and any worn, wet areas will start to be roped off to protect them from all traffic. Winter rules will be introduced on the 1st of November, however I have decided to hold off the compulsory use of fairway mats a little longer as there is still currently plenty of growth on the fairways . Please feel free to use them though to help protect the course that little bit more if you prefer.
I have submitted my annual report ahead of the AGM which I hope you all get a chance to read. It’s a summary of how the year has gone, the challenges we have faced and a bit on how I hope to move Penn forward in the future. I will be attending the AGM next week and hope to see as many of you there as possible. Whether it is positive or negative, all feedback is constructive and gives you the opportunity to have your say which helps us understand the members' expectations.
The sheet for the greenkeepers revenge competition on the 30th November should be up soon, please get your name down to take part in 9 holes of fun and help raise some money for more course improvements. It's open to every member at the club despite being on a Sunday so there is no excuse to miss out.
Enjoy your weekend
Dave.
