“Tolly Boys Outing” ends in Triumph at Aldeburgh
After a sticky start with a few nervous Tee shots from 2 of the first 3 pairings it was thought that things could only get better for the last pairing of Tom and Kenzie but hey, we’re playing at Aldeburgh so with a helicopter roughly a quarter mile away and their starter wrongly giving the home team the honour on the tee box each time it was ‘Kenzie Lodge to tee off just as the helicopter decided to bank left and fly over the clubhouse to land on the “River” course. Helicopter 1 Kenzie 0 as he decided to tee off anyway without much success. Fast forward 9 holes and the bringer of good news arrived in the form of Ray ‘of light’ Pope who casually mentioned that our first group were 5 up after 9 but even better he’d found 3 balls just coming to find us. The morning session finished with new pairing Jake Bailey and Kev Carter turning a 3 down after 7 into a 4 up win, Steve Blake and Stew Finch 2 up, Tom Gardiner and Kenzie scraping an All square against two of their Greenkeepers who basically didn’t 3 putt anywhere but struggled getting to the greens on occasions and Star team of the day by a country mile were Andy “The Wizard” Witthames and James “The Arrow” Bowman who were 10 up which was one more than the amount of balls Ray had found at this stage. The afternoon round kicked off with Max Evans and Luca Devine-Rushbroke, replacing Tom and Kenzie, who left it to the 18th to halve their match, Andy and James winning 2 up, Blakey and Finchy going 4 down having given their opponents 4 shots on their own track and Jake and Carts also finishing All square to give us a Winning total of 14 up. An excellent performance by the lads on a tough course and we look forward to welcoming Felixstowe in the second round at Gorleston.
Having armed himself with a ball retriever the “Pope” finished about 15 (balls) up which hopefully he can sell so as to treat himself to some new long socks that were considerably plucked to high heaven rooting around in all that gorse.
