Michael Gaughan won his first major 36 hole Championship at East Sussex National today with an incredible 2nd round 44 pts (-8).

Michael pictured before the presentation said ''it was my best ever round'' and is hoping that it's an omen ahead of tonight's Masters and Rory Mcilroy can make it an Irish double.

Michael playing off 11 handicap was not even in the reckoning after 31pts in round 1, but 22pts on the front nine got him back in the picture and despite a short missed putt on 17, was back in 22pts for a total of 75pts overall (-3).

He then had to sit and wait to see if any player could beat his score, but one by one they were unable to beat his total and he eventually won as 4 players tied on 75pts..

3rd Paul Martin 36 +39 = 75
4th James Dempsey 38 + 37 = 75
