Bowood Park March to Frank Wills Victory
21 years later....Bowood Park are Frank Wills Salver Champions again
Bowood Park - Frank Wills Salver Winners 2025

The Bowood Park Frank Wills Salver team won the 2025 Final yesterday at Perranporth as they defeated St Mellion in the 36-hole final. For Bowood this was their second Wills Salver win the first coming back in 2004.

Yet on a glorious golfing day under blue skies with the customary great coastal views, the Bowood team did not have it all their own way as three of the 5 games went to the 36th hole. Throughout the match both teams fought hard to overcome the fast and firm greens with even two putts not guaranteed with patience being the key word.

The first game to finish was game 5 as Bowood Team Captain David Goodman and partner Adam Hobbs treated St Mellion’s Pete Mehigan and James Clarke to an 8&7 defeat. Meanwhile the St Mellion pairing of Nathan Lister and Luke Birch in game 4 dealt Bowood’s Terry Bright and Gareth Williams a 4&2 loss.

Up front Bowood Park’s Jon Rowe and James Taylor came out winners by the odd hole over the two St Mellion juniors, Oban Webber and Harry Lusher. The latter pair had been 4 up at one stage during the afternoon but succumbed to a defeat at the final hole.

Following them the Bowood team claimed the overall win as in game 2 James Slatter and Dave Adey beat St Mellion team Captain Chris Burn and partner Tom Cooper again at the final hole. And to complete the win Bowood’s County Seniors team member Mark Johnson together with Steve Omlo beat Alan Poole and Chris Pountney at the last 2 up. For Poole, who battled with a calf injury from early in the first round, the highlight was a holed pitch from 100 yards at the par 4 13th.

Perranporth GC Captain Steven Nelson and CGU President Martin Edwards welcomed the teams with the latter expressing thanks to Perranporth for their support of the Union before presenting both winners and runners up with tankards.

For St Mellion Burn thanked his team and the caddies for their efforts across the season as well as Perranporth for hosting, before congratulating Bowood Park on their win in what had been a very sporting encounter.

Goodman thanked the host club for looking after both teams so well and to St Mellion for their part in what had been a good final. He was able to recall the 2004 win for his club and suggested the ‘somewhat messy’ celebrations then, would be repeated. He thanked the CGU and those who had managed the day as well as Secretary Chris Pountney for the work in arranging all the winter knockout matches under often weather impacted circumstances.
