Team of the Century
Everton – Liverpool – Man. City – Man. United.

As we are now in the final year of our centenary, it may be interesting to reflect on other sports occurring over the last century. One prominent sport is football, not least with four major Premier League clubs in close proximity Everton, Liverpool, Man. City and Man United. Each of these teams has a good following of supporters within the membership of our golf club.

To coincide with our centenary, a competition has been organised to give members an opportunity of selecting their “Team of the Century” for each of the four major football clubs, whilst also contributing to the centenary fund.

Each entrant will receive a sheet giving a selection of prominent players from the specific club spanning 60 years from 1964/65 season to present 2024/25 season. Not a full century, but sufficient to include the later 60’s when all four clubs had successful teams.
N.B. No two people will have the same opinion and the selection will be that of the organiser.

From the selection of players given the entrant selects their starting eleven, seven substitutes, a Captain and a Manager. Their selections are entered onto an entry sheet to be submitted with their entry stake. The entrant will also select a player not included in the schedule that they think should be. If required, this may be used as a “Tie Break”.

For each football club a model “Team of the Century” will be produced by a panel consisting of one permanent member and one guest member with a particular affinity to the specific football club. The model “Team of the Century” will then become the template to compare all entries.
To avoid any possible leak this selection will not be made until after the closing date for each round. Obviously the persons nominated to the panel will be unable to enter the competition.

Each entry will be compared to the model and points awarded for each match made. 2 points for an exact match of the starting eleven and 1 point for every other match. The entry with the most points will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie the panel producing the model will select their choice from the given “Tie Break” entries.

To maintain fairness completed entries will be collated and marked by the organiser and verified by an independent member of the club. The panel setting the model will not be aware of identities of entrants and, in the event of a tie, will only be given the “Tie Break” options to adjudicate.

It is proposed to run this competition for each of the four football clubs, spread across the remainder of the calendar year. Toward the end of the year, when all four football clubs have been completed, the final round can be contested. This will involve the models used for all four football clubs being integrated to produce the ultimate pool of players from which to select a “Team of the Century”.

Each entry will have a stake of £5.00 with a prize of £100.00 going to the winner.
Entry sheets are available from the Bunker Bar.
Completed entry sheets and entry stake should be returned to Bar.

Although a model “Team of the Century” is referred to, this competition is all about personal opinions and the model is just that, the opinion of the panel members. Each round of the competition is aimed at providing members with some fun and no doubt a lot of discussion and debate.
