Maxstoke put on a strong display in the first outing of 2025 to cruise past Nuneaton.
The men’s scratch team opened the 2025 season with victory against Nuneaton in the Warwickshire Cup.
Jamie Ataria had the honour of the first tee shot of 2025, partnered by Stephen Murphy for the day. They had the toughest game of the 3, with the home side fielding their strongest pair. The match was tight with neither team able to pull away and at the turn Maxstoke were 1 down .
The 2nd game out saw the wise and experienced Kevin Henderson partner young Charlie Seddon. The pair put on a solid front 9 performance to make the turn at a comfortable 4 up. Nuneaton took advantage of the 12th hole where both Maxstoke players hit it OB. The comeback, however, was quickly shut down as Maxstoke won the 13th to go dormie 5 and the players shook hands on the 15th green with Maxstoke winning 4&3.
The final pairing saw Glyn Lawrence and Harry Iddon paired together. The pair won the first hole and never looked back. It was a scintillating performance with both players in top form playing mistake free golf. They won the first 4 consecutive holes, lost the 5th, won 6, 7 and 8 and then tied the 9th after Nuneaton superbly chipped in for a par. The pair led 6 up after 9 and didn’t take their foot off the gas. They won 10 and 11 and put the first point on the board for Maxstoke. A relentless 8&7 victory.
With 2 points secured, Maxstoke were victorious in the tie and after watching Kevin and Charlie win from the 16th tee, Jamie and Stephen also shook hands on their game.
Maxstoke would like to thank Nuneaton for their hospitality and we all thoroughly enjoyed the condition of the course in early Feb. Credit to the greens team.
Maxstoke now advance to the quarter finals of the Warwickshire Cup. Another away game against Ladbrook Park.
