Winter Course Works
December 2024
As we move into the winter months, the greenkeeping team at Rhuddlan Golf Club continues to focus on improving the course’s drainage, addressing some long-standing problem areas, and enhancing the overall playing experience for our members.

The drainage works already undertaken this winter are already showing positive results. Key areas of concern have seen significant improvement, with the enhanced drainage system on the 7th and 17th beginning to have a real impact.

One of the most noticeable changes has been in how quickly the greens dry after heavy rain. Earlier this year, we used a shockwave/earthquake machine to break up the subsurface of the greens, fairways and tees, a method that has had a tremendous effect on the speed at which the surface dries following downpours. This improvement has been noted by many of our members, with positive feedback pouring in regarding the faster recovery of the greens.

Looking ahead, the greenkeeping team will be focusing efforts on the area surrounding the 13th, 14th, and 15th holes. A key project will involve the expansion of the pond on the left-hand side of the 14th fairway, which has been a particularly wet area. By increasing the size of this pond, we aim to improve the drainage of this section of the course. The enlarged pond will drain into the larger pond on the 13th hole via underground pipes, which in turn feeds into the ditch by the 11th hole, ensuring that excess water is effectively carried off the course.

This new, larger water holding area will significantly improve the surrounding fairways, reducing soft and soggy conditions, particularly during wetter periods. It will also allow us to further refine and enhance the course’s drainage infrastructure in the coming years.

As part of our ongoing bunker improvements, we’re making some changes to the 17th hole greenside bunkers. On the left-hand side of the green, where drainage issues have caused ongoing challenges, we’re starting a redesign. The current two bunkers, which have long been some of the most troublesome spots on the course, will be replaced with a single, more strategically placed bunker. This new bunker will feature advanced Eco-Bunker technology materials. Positioned on the front left of the green. It will extend upward toward the centre of the green, helping to improve both playability and drainage. The current rear bunker and remaining part of the front bunker will be filled in, raised out of water table and landscaped using excavated soils from the drainage program.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to enhance the course

We appreciate your ongoing support as we continue to make improvements that will ensure Rhuddlan Golf Club remains one of the best-maintained courses in the region.
As always, we welcome your feedback and look forward to seeing you out on the course this winter.
