We had 18-holes open today with the 2nd hole in play to a temporary green and 17a closed. We opened the 2nd to the temporary today so we could divert the traffic from walking behind the 2nd green to reach the 3rd tee. This area is showing signs of wear and tear and needs to be rested for a few days. 17a is also very soft following the recent rainfall and not ideal for playing at the moment. We are trying to keep 18-holes open whenever possible so that knockout matches can be played.
Unusually, the first 150 yards in front of the 1st tee is probably one of the wettest areas of the course at the moment. We think this may be partly due to the extra compaction it received with all of the contractors heavy equipment using this route to access the course. When conditions are firm enough, we will take our procore over this area to try and relieve some of the compaction and help the drainage.
I'm very pleased with the results of fairway drainage we have installed on the 3rd, 7th and 8th holes, there is no standing water at all on these holes and the fairways are very firm. The real test of the effectiveness of this drainage is no doubt yet to come but, the early signs are very positive. I'm also extremely impressed with the quality of the work on the 2nd hole and the new ditch on the 3rd hole. Lots of members have already shared feedback with me and are very pleased with this work.
Looking ahead, the forecast is for heavy rain overnight tonight with some forecasts suggesting as much as an inch of rain could fall between midnight and 8 am tomorrow. If we do receive this level of rainfall, it is unlikely that the course will be playable tomorrow. Hopefully, it would just need 24 hours to drain and we would be open again on Thursday. The greenkeepers will update the course status as early as possible tomorrow and I will send out an update on latest news tomorrow afternoon.
