First Ladies Day Season Competition
Sunday 14th April 2024
Sunday, 14th April 2024, will go down in the folklore of Glasgow Golf Club, heading up a new chapter in a future third Book, documenting the evolution of the Clubs long and proud history.
Thirty-six Ladies of GGC gathered for the Club’s first ever ‘Ladies’ competition.
Although 36 seems a small turnout - this is nearly 50% of the total Lady Partners & Ordinary membership. Testimony for the appetite for similar competitions in the future.
As Captain Peter McEachran mentioned jokingly in his remarks at the pre-golf Champagne reception - “in 1904 the club first considered having ladies join the club but it has taken 120 years to organise the first competition”

After the ‘Bubbles’ reception, all gathered for a photo, on the steps of the Clubhouse, that have documented many historic gatherings over the last 120 odd years.
A Texas Scramble was the choice of competition, accommodating an eclectic mix of handicaps. Nine teams shared a two tee start - 1st & 6th. Unfortunately no matter how well M&H can plan a competition, the weather is an uncontrollable. The woolly hats were on from the start as a northerly wind tested the first drives. A dry start to the day, however squally showers, as predicted, made for an uncomfortable last hours play.
Considering the conditions the scoring was excellent and the winning two scores of 61 and 63 were exceptional.
The weather could not dampen the importance of the occasion.
Like similar Men’s shotgun competitions, the golf is sometimes secondary, this was an opportunity to gather in a larger sociable group, encouraging interaction between a Ladies section in its infancy.
From the buzz in the room, post golf, ALL the Ladies had thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and truly it was ‘the taking part’ and ‘the day itself’ that was the real winner.

Thanks to Karen Neilson, Elspeth McLaren and Gillian Prentice for working with M&H.
Thanks to Carol Cameron for the ‘Tablet Favours’ - a wee momento of the day
