Captain’s Newsletter

It’s been a few weeks since I took over as Captain and already it’s got very busy. Firstly, the Captains Drive had to be rescheduled due to poor weather, luckily, we did manage to get it in on the second time of asking. The sun came out that afternoon which made it even more memorable and thanks to all who supported and watched Lady Captain Suzanne, Senior Captain Dave Hunton, Junior Captain Stanley Williams and Myself tee off and for all your generous donations to our Captains Charity - St Lukes Hospice. Congratulations to all the winners.
This was closely followed by trying to arrange the Manchester and District Alliance (MDGA) Mixed Foursomes Archie Preston match at Home to Turton Golf Club. Again, the weather became the issue having to reschedule, however we did finally manage to get the match played after the MDGA granted an extension, unfortunately the result didn’t go our way, going down 6-1 on a shorten course of 14 holes and some couples giving away 11 shots. It was definitely not to be as 3 groups took their matches to the 18th but albeit not in our favour.
On the 18th April 38 members headed to warmer (and drier) climates to Cyprus for the annual Captains away trip, a place, I believe as a club we have never ventured. Playing the PGA National, ELEA, Minthis Hills, and Secret Valley a great time was had by all, everything went really well and right on schedule. Thanks to all who supported and your generous donations.
All our NSL teams have been in action, playing in their first matches of the season with the A team beating Wychwood A 7-3, the B team beating Leek Westwood 8-2, and the C team drawing 5-5 with Stone. A good start to the season for our Saturday players.
The Thursday VETS also had their first matches and were drawn against each other with the B team coming out on top 7-5. I’m sure there will be much rivalry on the return fixture.
Congratulations to our Juniors (Team Crewe) who represented their schools in the Cheshire Schools Championship. Morgan Bollan and Callum Woolley have now been selected to represent Cheshire Schools in the North Schools Championships. Morgan also winning the U16 best gross will now play in the National U16 Championships. Good luck to you all. Also, congratulations to Jacob Challinor on winning the Junior Wilhall Trophy.
Congratulations also to our professional Ed Parker for completing the London Marathon. Finishing in an incredible time of 3hrs.54mins. Ed raised over £3000 for his chosen charity the Stroke Association. An amazing achievement, especially considering his training injury. Well Done Ed.
Good luck and Thank you.
I would like to wish all our incoming Captains, Lady Captain Suzanne, Senior Captain Dave, and Junior Captain Stanley and our President Steve all the very best in office for the up-and-coming season. I know things have started to get busy.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Captains Barry and Michelle for all their hard work during the last twelve months. You’ll definitely be a hard act to follow.

Our Charity:
For this year’s Charity - Lady Captain Suzanne and I have decided for this year’s Captains Charity to support St Lukes Hospice. Based in Winsford, it has a catchment area of the whole of mid and south Cheshire (~300,000 people) and on average looks after over a 1,000 families a year.
For every patient they support they will also be supporting their partner, their children, their wider family, and their friends.
I would like to thank one of our very kind members who kindly donated a somewhat large Chocolate Egg along with a traditional Italian Easter Cake which raised well over £200 and congratulations to the winner and new member Kev Robins. Well done.
We have also introduced the Captains Bunkers on the 18th for those unfortunate golfers who find themselves in the bunkers. If you would kindly give a small donation of any loose change or alternatively use the bar code on the Charity boxes which are placed on the end of the bar. This sends one standard text message to St Lukes.
Many thanks
