Herkless Trophy returns to The St Rule Club
Wednesday 1 May 2024
The Herkless Trophy was played this week in contrasting conditions on the Eden Course, with sunshine on Tuesday evening and thick mist on Wednesday morning. The St Regulus Club ran the event this year and their Captain, Moira Wilbraham, hosted a most enjoyable drinks party and prize-giving at their clubhouse on Wednesday evening.

The winners were Karen de Korte and Belinda Sprot, playing for the St Rule Club, with an impressive total of 67.5. The trophy was presented by the St Andrews Links Trust Chairman, Sandra Tuddenham, who provided some interesting background information about the attractive silver cup. It was presented to Mrs Herkless, wife of the Provost John Herkless, who hit the first drive at the opening ceremony for the Eden Course in June 1914. The cup went missing for several years but was discovered in an antique shop in England. It was purchased in 1985 by the Links Trust for the sum of £200 and returned to St Andrews where it has been contested among the ladies’ clubs ever since.

Congratulations to Belinda and KJ!
